Monkey Business in Art

What a lovely challenge.... create a portrait of a young monkey that you want to hug!

With a beautiful rustic brown pastel surface selected (Murano), I set about drawing my first line. Shapes and proportion are the most important aspects of a drawing. Without this, you are on a pathway to sure failure.

Each mark you make, with all your available tools around you, must mean something. As soon as you are just shading/drawing a line for the sake of it.... STOP. This often means your work is finished, and you can say no more.

The development of the monkey continued from shapes, line and tones

To the final nuances of highlights/mid tones, finalised the character of the monkey

I'm happy with this portrait of a monkey, as I feel I could pick up this young chimp and give it a big hug!
