Couldn't resist this character - a huge bear.
Starting with a large 18 x 24 inch Strathmore Toned Tan paper, I start hand drawing proportions and shapes.
I kept on drawing directional lines until I was happy with the shapes and composition
When I'm happy, the fun continues with shading to create form
I use anything around me from erasers, hand, rolled up paper. This creates interest and texture.
On this portrait I continued with compressed tonal charcoal - The problem I came across was trying to get high contrasts - the more you place the charcoal, the more you have to be careful you don't overwork what inspired you to draw the portrait.
I was happy with the portraits, as I feel I have managed to capture the essence of the bear and the weight of the fur.
